I’ve never had much luck with shooting in Petty Harbour. That’s always been a little perplexing, as it’s very quaint. That’s not just me talking… it’s often chosen by movie makers as a fill-in-the-blank Newfoundland outport.
It wasn’t until just recently that I finally clued in as to why I’m never quite happy with my shots. It has to do with the way the harbour faces due east, while also being tucked right down in a valley. The problem is, just as the sun is getting low in the west and things are looking good, the light disappears behind a big hill.
These shots were taken just before the corn shots from yesterday. As you can see from Angelika’s pose, it was windy and freezing, even with several jacket layers and thermal underwear.

Anyway, rule of thumb when shooting Petty Harbour…
When the light goes to shit, you still have time to drive somewhere else to get some good stuff.

We made a quick stop in CBS to get a few shots of the sunset. More to come.

This photo was taken on Wednesday in Long Pond, CBS, and as you can see there was a beautiful sunset that evening.

I’ve since found that it was witnessed by several photographers.
My fellow Fotogeek thinks that it is somewhat “creepy” when this happens – when she thinks that another person was shooting nearby, at about the same time… perhaps even a photographer known primarily through an online photo sharing site. Whenever I’m witness to this realization (often accompanied by a look of shock and / or horror) I simply point out that, with the climate being what it is, Newfoundland photographers are fortunate not to physically trip over each other when shooting during fleeting moments of nice weather.

Well, not quite. Sun + Off Early from Work = Content.
Without a minute to spare, we arrived at an adequate location to capture the evening’s sunset. During the show, I could hear another nearby camera, busily clicking off multiple bracketed shots. I was working without support.
Tomorrow (hopefully), another small B&H order arrives with some tiny treats, and one big one… a new tripod for yours truly. Can’t wait.
