Exotic Travels

Saturday October 24th, 2009 @ 5:54 pm by Randy

randy-october-24-2009-c1As a result of running out of space on the external storage for the PVR, I had to purge some programming. Top of the list is Travels to the Edge. So while being housebound with the flu, and while trying to avoid some studying, I had a bit of a Art Wolfe-a-thon. It’s inspiring to watch this guy travel to exotic locations to shoot nature and the culture of locals. Despite that, it’s also a little depressing – new locations every half hour, willing subjects and thousands of $ in lenses and equipment. Add to that the 30 second Microsoft add at the start / end of every episode, and Art was toast.

Ah well, that’s a shot from our walk around Long Pond a few days ago using the kit lens.

Does anyone else see modern post production as The Great Equalizer?

Yep that is the name of the community that we are moving to when the renovations on our house are complete.  It is a beautiful area with opportunites everywhere.  I have not had much time to explore yet but here is a little tease.

fall

Maybe if it will stop raining  long enough I may beable to get some more Fall shots.

Petty Harbour Sunset

Wednesday October 14th, 2009 @ 7:33 pm by Randy

I’ve never had much luck with shooting in Petty Harbour. That’s always been a little perplexing, as it’s very quaint. That’s not just me talking… it’s often chosen by movie makers as a fill-in-the-blank Newfoundland outport.

randy-october-14-2009-c2It wasn’t until just recently that I finally clued in as to why I’m never quite happy with my shots. It has to do with the way the harbour faces due east, while also being tucked right down in a valley. The problem is, just as the sun is getting low in the west and things are looking good, the light disappears behind a big hill.

These shots were taken just before the corn shots from yesterday. As you can see from Angelika’s pose, it was windy and freezing, even with several jacket layers and thermal underwear.

Anyway, rule of thumb when shooting Petty Harbour…
When the light goes to shit, you still have time to drive somewhere else to get some good stuff.

Stop… I’ll shoot something now

Tuesday October 13th, 2009 @ 8:56 pm by Randy

We got out to take a few pictures a few days ago… the first time in a very long time. We piled in the car and headed nowhere in particular.

Upon leaving the house, the light was crap, and I saw very little to shoot. About an hour into it though, the light came, and we had just a few minutes to get something.
