A few shots from yesterday.
We were surprised and delighted to see the sun this morning and got on-the-go early, despite the frigid temperature.
PS. This is the first time I’ve used the new Highslide Gallery in Wordpress 2.7 with a nasty little bit to make things display just right. It works in Firefox and Safari, which means it’s probably broken in some version of IE. Please let me know in a comment if it’s all wonky with your browser.

Having myself been on more than a few excursions as a photographer’s assistant, I’m very appreciative when there is someone else willing to fulfill this charge.

Dylan is quite capable in the role, having an extraordinary ability to lug gear despite his tiny stature. He does occasionally need help to maintain focus on the job at hand (sorry, no pun intended), but his attention can usually be restored with the simple promise of a few Timbits and an episode of SpongBob.

Early Saturday wasn’t looking good for outside photography, so we began some indoor shooting in earnest. As luck would have it, late in the afternoon saw some clearing… we even managed to get out after dark for a few shots.
Here’s a few from early in the day.

We have been blessed here in our household with the arrival of a package from the very bestest place in the world… B&H Photo Video. Oh God, how I love them.
Apparently and unfortunately however, following right behind the Canada Post Employee is a wall of Snow and Wind the likes of which we’ve not yet seen this winter in Newfoundland. This has forced me to play indoors with the new toys.

As you can see, I’ve been shooting various bits of crap in the living room.

I seen on the news and read on the internet about the unusual amount of bald eagles down at Quidi Vidi this year. I love bald eagles, even done a research paper on them back when I was studing forestry. So I made plans to get down to the lake and check out the action.
I must have been a little dillusional. What did I think, that the eagles would fly up to me and pose? I learned two things when I was at the lake. 1 – you need a long lens to even have a chance to get a decent picture and 2- you also need some patience. I have neither. I stood with the camera and waited and started to take pictures…. of pigeons,

and some of the hundreds of ducks wandering around waiting for some easy handouts.

I even attempted to get a duck in flight.

The easiest subject though was the seagulls.

There were so many of them that I had little choice but to snap away. It helps that they have no problem flying, landing and screaming right next to you. Easy targets for sure, but I attempted to get them in flight.

Oh yea, the bald eagles, I almost forgot about them. The first day I was down there I seen 6 of them, flying and landing on the ice to grab some of the dead ducks and seagulls frozen to the ice everywhere on the lake!! How many pictures did I get of the 6 eagles? NONE!! My equipment just didn’t have the reach I needed and they smartly landed out of range all the time. You’d think they would came over and pose for me! No such luck. After seeing so many I was determined to get a picture so I went to the lake again the next day. Same old stuff… pigeons, seagulls, crows and ducks (even seen 2 injured ducks) and finally a raptor ALMOST close enough for me to capture. After all that here’s the picture.

Should I call National Geographic now to see if they want to publish it? LMAO!! Time to invest in new, longer glass I think!!

The sun has not shown itself in St. John’s in a few days, and the new equipment has not yet arrived, so I’m afraid it’s back to the archives for content.

These are a few shots from the Ontario trip back in the fall. Toronto is… well… Nice I guess – that’s about all I can say. It never really left an impression on me as many cities would have. I think Angelika agreed, as can be seen from the look on her face.
