The forecast for Saturday was looking pretty bad all week, so when things started to look up as per Enviroment Canada late on Friday, we hobbled together a plan for an early morning outing.
As it turns out, we actually arrived a little late for the sunrise at Cape Spear. No matter, as most of the first few minutes of the show were obstructed by cloud.
Upon turning to leave, we grabbed a few shots of the lighthouse. I was pleasantly surprised to find that my camera was smart enough to take multiple AEB shots automatically when using the two second timer. I was also pleasantly surprised that Angelika graciously let me use her tripod.

When a shadow as clear and defined as you’ve ever seen greets you at breakfast, you know it’s going to be a good day for photography. This was the case on Thursday. Unfortunately, I had other commitments.

After work, we headed out with no real direction and only about 45 minutes of light remaining – IOW, it turned into a high speed sun chase. There was little to show for it I’m afraid, other than a few Duck pictures.
Now if I could get a shot of some of the Eagles at Quidi Vidi, I’d be happy.

I had just started home from work yesterday when the light caught my eye. After a quick change-of-gears I grabbed a few shots.

Last Sunday, while out shooting, we were looking for a few colourful row houses to photograph. The search had been ongoing for just a few minutes when we stumbled upon this graffiti. Knowing it couldn’t be topped, we gave up on the houses.

This is it. I was on my way somewhere, seen a duck in a freezing cold river and happened to have my camera, so took a picture.

To say you are truly “ready” for winter in Newfoundland is something of a misnomer.
While planning any sort of outdoor activity you must take special care to study the forecast and dress accordingly. The temperature can regularly hover down around -10C, but will also go above 0C. If a range as wide as this was a total variation for the season, that would be easy to deal with. Unfortunately, in this province, that sort of range can happen within one day.
That’s why shooting around here – outside and in winter – is a difficult task. You have to “dress warm” and hope that anyone shooting with you does the same. It’s also good to keep in mind that your camera, like many mechanical / electronic devices, can be sensitive to temperature. More specifically, while it may not have a particular problem with any mildly cold or warm environment, it certainly will take issue with rapid switching between extremes – from the warm interior of a car to the frigidly cold wind-swept cliff overlooking the North Atlantic, for example.
Angelika was prepared. She also seems to have overcome a challenge that I’ve been struggling with for some time – she’s found the proper glove for cold weather photography. There also appears to be a “post shooting” ritual of tightly clutching a hot beverage.
