Buried Treasure?
6 degrees in St. John’s today, and my back yard is slowly revealing it’s treasures. Some of the treasure revealed had been left behind by the dog, and others should have been brought inside for the winter, like this yellow cement mixer
I wonder what other toys are lurking out there?
La Manche… again
So, what was I taking a picture of while someone was taking my picture? The bay of course….
La Manche
A small group of us took a shot out to La Manche on Sunday. The community, abandoned after a storm in the 60’s, has been a popular hiking destination for campers in the provincial park of the same name as well as those tackling the East Coast Trail.
Knowing full well that it would be a bit of an adventure, we prepared ourselves accordingly. We drove to the end of the existing road, broke out the beverages and winter clothing, and headed down the hill toward the park – in exactly the wrong direction. After touring some lovely snow covered camp sites, we headed back up the hill and down (the correct one) toward the old settlement.
The walk to the community would have been very easy if it wasn’t for the snow. It was great that we had one set of foot prints to lead us to the settlement, but the crust wasn’t hard enough to support our weight, so travel was slow.

Still, it’s a beautiful area, and as can be seen on the MUN site above, was a picturesque community. I’d recommend it as a nice place to visit in the summer, but it’s only worth the hike in the winter if you’re unable to make it when there’s no snow. We had decided that it was worth the effort, but many of the remaining structures (mostly just poured concrete foundations now) are snow covered.
That’s a shot of Kim on the top BTW, just before she noticed the aeroplane, and Andreau down below as he shot the harbour.
Scenes from Flatrock
As I haven’t been able to get out and take pictures in the last week I decided to post some from around October. Myself and Angus headed down to Flatrock for a walk out to the point, and, as always, I had my camera ready. Here are a few of the pictures I managed to take while holding back 140 lbs of ocean crazy dog!!
Fort Amherst
A few shots from about a month ago – the second Fotogeeks outing. We hung around on the Signal Hill trail for about an hour waiting for the sunrise behind Fort Amherst and it’s Lighthouse.
There was a bit of a delay due to the cloud on the horizon and, despite all the waiting, we still weren’t really ready when the sun finally broke.
